Sudan - A Quranic school and the veneration of the local Sufi in Sudan
Overview
The first part of the film shows a religious school where young
men and children study the Quran while chanting and moving
rhythmically. Students use wooden tablets to exercise calligraphy
and memorise the Quran. The memorisation of the holy text has a
long tradition in Islam and starts from an early age.
The second part of the film underlines the importance of past Sufi
masters, who often are considered to be local saints, as here in
Sudan. Gradually their tombs become the focus of local
pilgrimage.
